Cascading Capitals with Suzie Beringer - March 2025

Creating tiny delicate Roman Capitals and allowing their placement to become a major part of the design was the focus of the workshop.

This was a fabulous class. Suzie is just an inspiring person and teacher.

I’ve been curious about cascading capitals and was happy to take Suzi’s class at last. What an excellent, inspirational teacher with the best of smiles. When she worked on her own to demo, I could see how excellent her calligraphy really was. And I enjoyed her sharing trade secrets about tools and supplies!

Suzie is always a delight to learn from. She makes the process so easy to understand and is so generous with all the tips that she has mastered for the Cascading Capitals workshop. The handouts are incredible, and for her to include her demo pages for our book we made is a bonus. She makes learning fun and her ongoing support is priceless. She is truly a gem!

Suzie Beringer never fails to teach me new ways of thinking about letters, and Cascading Capitals is another wonderful example. She organized my thought thoroughly with regard to Romans and proportions. We dissected every letter and then added press and release to our execution to build solid foundation for moving to pen and ink and then cascading. Suzie’s teaching style is gentle, generous: she shares her thoughts, tips, hints about her creative planning, and that is why we are in her class. I am planning ways to use cascading Romans, and one is for a birthday card with balloons.

Of note, first thing Saturday morning she shared information about lead holders. An artist patient gave me his entire collection of lead holders, leads, and sharpener from his Pratt Institute days (before I was born). I have wanted to embrace them, and now I can. We all were amused by the dissection of the sharpener, which was a bit of a mystery until now.

Suzie’s workshops are well organized, and she maintains a pace that allows for questions and discussion. In the end we bound our compressed handouts, exercise worksheets, and pen/ink play into an interesting book. Her handouts are easy to understand and full of exactly what we need. The generous inclusion of compressed copies for our book is stellar! I appreciate Suzie’s creation of a dynamic environment for learning and studying our subject. I’m already looking for her next offer.
