About Us

CLAS includes all levels of calligraphers, lettering artists, bookbinders, printers and sign-writers, as well as those who simply have an abiding interest in the historical and/or contemporary applications of these forms of expression. We are teachers, artists, skilled amateurs, professionals and dabblers.

CLAS is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1979. Although our membership is mainly within North and South Carolina, we welcome members from other states. We strive to provide a means of communication and exchange of ideas between our members in the Carolinas.

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM), held each spring, is a weekend event which includes an educational workshop, a business meeting, fellowship, and good food.

Member Benefits

The mission of the Carolina Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) is to promote the study, practice, and appreciation of calligraphy, lettering and the book arts. We also work to encourage excellence in lettering and writing. We seek to foster a wider appreciation and deeper understanding of the history, traditions and applications of our art form.

Membership in the Carolina Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) offers discounted fees for CLAS sponsored workshops, retreat and lectures. It also, includes a subscription to the semi-annual printed Bulletin (see below) as well as access to the Membership Directory, updated annually.

Members have access to a Lending Library containing newsletters of other groups in the US and abroad. Videos, DVDs and books on calligraphic subjects are also available for individual or group study. Please contact Nell Hall or Liz Simmonds for more information.

In an effort to encourage communication within CLAS, we have a moderated Yahoo! Group for members, called CLASofNC.  Members will find updated information on activities taking place between Bulletins.  New members are invited to join the group.  If you are a member and would like to join the group, please contact Membership Secretary, Kathi Fogleman.

The Bulletin is published twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, and contains both brief and comprehensive articles, interviews, book reviews, workshop reviews, and members' artwork, CLAS business, and information about events occurring on a regional and national level.
