Class Description

A workshop with two different approaches to expression taught by practical, logical Annie Cicale and soulful, visionary Joyce Teta. It is a duality of attracting opposites to provide attendees with techniques and tools to pull your inner self onto paper activating a sense of wonder. With the instruction and guidance of these two esteemed artists, capture expression and feeling on paper. Come with your own focus for your book, your existing skillset and learned knowledge. Expand it with alternate ways of thinking and seeing followed by instruction in color, space and form resulting in marks, sketches, images, tones, words and phrases. It is a captured process of feed and flow reflective of your focus. Then bind it all into a book, fully expressing your inner artist.

‍Intro from Annie Cicale

The written word has been housed in book structures for hundreds of years, first in written manuscripts, followed by the invention of moveable type in 1454. The concepts are simple: words, images and a structure to house them. The book is one of our greatest inventions, as it is a container for thoughts expressed in word and image. We can take drawing, lettering, photography, and printmaking classes to learn techniques that we can apply to our own artist’s books. We will explore some of the options for presenting your own story in an artist’s book In this workshop. You can work with a variety of media, beginning with pencil or pen and ink. Your imagery can range from abstract marks that are a response to the narrative your story, or with symbols and illustrations that show your vision more clearly. For lettering, you might use one of your styles that you have learned as a calligrapher or your regular handwriting. A linear book structure lets you cover a time span or a memorable event. Your instructors will help you refine your ideas. In this workshop, we ask that you think of something of significance to your life, and we’ll help you get it on paper. Your supply list will include basic tools for lettering and drawing, and you can add a few of your own that you know you want to try. The instructors will demonstrate various processes and will help you make them work in your project. These experiments will be used in a simple sewn book structure. Our goal is to help you present the path of your thoughts so that you can share with others—in a book form.

Intro from Joyce Teta

We are ALL gifted with personal perceptions, which makes us process oriented. Annie Cicale and Joyce Teta are inviting you to play in your narrative. This workshop is for day dreamers, bird watchers, cat lovers, dog walkers, garden diggers, photo stashers, mark makers, collectors of miscellany.... Creativity is a universal cognitive function present when you sort and solve. Collecting is a distinctive form of creativity, combined ideas are a way into your brain’s inner artist. The relationship between creativity and collecting is deeply intertwined. Collecting activates creative skills, stimulates examination, making connections, provides inspiration, instilling self expression for new artistic approaches. Together we can spark ideas, build relationships, develop new ways of editing, to activate our innate ability to generate fresh concepts and solutions. Our goal for you to leave with a hand sewed-made artist book.

Her work has been included in many calligraphic publications, including Bound & Lettered and Letter Arts Review. Her artist’s books are in private and public collections, including Yale University, the Lilly Library at Indiana University and the University of Denver. She is fascinated with the visual nature of text on paper, working in both traditional and contemporary ways. With an MFA in graphic design, Annie is the author of "The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering" and the just released "A Scribe's Journey."

These retreats occur 2 to 3 times a year and are led by internationally recognized calligraphy and lettering artists.
